Cutch Tree (Karingali) has the binomial name Acacia catechu, belonging to the Mimosaceae family. It is popular medicinal plant and added to boiling water used for drinking as it can quench thirst. It is a good medicine to purify the blood, and also for skin disease, cough and worm infestations. Cutch Tree (Karingali) is a thorny tree having a white and yellow color.
The core of the wood, flowers and tender stems of it have medicinal values. The core of a mature Cutch Tree (karingali) tree contains chemicals like catechin, tannin etc. The gum we get from the core of the wood contains certain bio chemicals like galactose, xylose etc. The extract of Cutch Tree (karingali) is used to clear the throat. The core of Cutch Tree (Karingali), bark of neem tree, tinospora (chittamruthu), the vines of wild snake gourd and tree turmeric (maramanjal) are made into a decoction (kashayam) with the direction from an ayurvedic physician, can be consumed to cure all types of skin disorders. The tender stem of Cutch Tree (Karingali) is used to brush teeth as it gives strength to the teeth and gums. Cutch Tree (Karingali) is also a medicine for biliousness, cough and diabetes.
Cutch Tree (Karingali) grows in all types of soil and it produces fruits by the end of December. One fruit contains up to 6 seeds. Seeds are used for propagation of Cutch Tree (Karingali). Seeds can be sown in polythene covers filled with mixture of powdered cow dung and top soil. Two seeds can be sown in a cover and only the healthy sapling is selected. The saplings are replanted once they reach 6 leaf stage. A pit, half ammeter deep is made and filled with powdered animal manure (4 kg) and top soil and kept it as such for 7 days. After 7 days the saplings are removed from the polythene covers and planted in the pits. Since the Cutch Tree (Karingali) grows in to a tree, the saplings should be planted with a distance of 7 meters each. Water should be provided on the day of planting. After 3 years of growth, it can grow depending on the rain. In the beginning years, the tender stem and flowers can be used for medicinal use depending on the growth of the tree. By 10 years the Cutch Tree (Karingali) attains a good core inside. The mature branches of the tree should be cut and checked for the core before cutting the whole tree.
