Long pepper is a vine that is related to pepper. The long pepper has a scientific name Piper longum and belongs to the family Piperaceae. The mature spikes of long pepper is used as medicine. A variety of long pepper is found. It is a good medicine for cough, piles, poison of scorpion, digestive disorders and diseases affecting spleen. It is also used to lower body temperature and also to get good sleep. Powdered long pepper mixed with milk is a good remedy for cough, cold, loss of appetite etc. It is also used as medicine post- delivery, where it is mixed with raisins 3 times its quantity and mashed and consumed. It improves health and digestion in women. Also a medicine made from its fruit, root, dried ginger, and koduveli tubers are given to cure gastric problems, indigestion and fever.
Even though long pepper is closely related to pepper, the growth pattern is different. The stems of it are used for propagation. Stems with 2 to 3 nodes are used for this. These stems are planted in polythene covers filled with soil and cattle manure, with one node planted under the soil. The moisture content should be kept intact in the polythene covers. The roots set in 20 day sand during the onset of monsoon these saplings can be replanted. The ground should be thoroughly ploughed and ridges are made 25 cm from the ground level a d the saplings are planted. The spikes of it start to come 6 months from planting and it takes two and half months to mature. The spikes should be plucked before they ripen when they attain a blackish green color. These spikes are dried in sunlight and used as medicine. The harvesting season begins 8 months from planting and one vine can last up to 5 years.
