Cultivating Tulsi (Holy Basil) at home is a must due to its immense medicinal properties. Tulsi (Holy Basil) can be cultivated in all types of soil. It grows well in soil with good moisture content but at the same time this plant needs good sunlight also. It will not grow in places with water logging. Propagation in Thulasi (Tulsi-Holy Basil) is done by seeds. The seeds of it are very small. With proper care and sunlight, Tulsi or Holy Basil can grow up to 1 meter high. When the inflorescence becomes red the seeds can be collected looking at the black color. The inflorescence is plucked from the plant and dried in shade and later tied in cloth and set aside for a week. While sowing, the seeds are mixed with fine sand as they are very tiny and also to regulate the distance between plants. The seeds are sown in land which has been thoroughly shaken and after sowing the area should be covered with a layer of mud. Water should be sprinkled carefully since the seeds are tiny and the saplings can be replanted once it attains 6 leaf stage.
In a pit 50 cm deep, add a mixture of dried cow dung and top soil to fill it and make a heap 30 cm above the pit and plant the saplings on them. Watering and support should be given accordingly and the saplings should be planted at a space of 1 meter from each other. The months after monsoon are the ideal time to plant the saplings. During the stages of growth, vermiform compost or dried cow dung should be mixed with the soil under each plant. Moisture should be retained always and weeds should be plucked off regularly. Once the plant Thulasi (Tulsi -Holy Basil) attains full growth, they can be used for medicinal purposes.
