The first thing we see after waking up is called a “Kani”. Is it believed that seeing something divine or good as kani will bring good luck, the whole day. Vishu kani is very important to Malayalis (keralites). A good Vishu kani will bring fortune all year round. Flowers from the golden shower tree, a lighted lamp, a divine scripture, a shell (shankh), the picture of a deity, yellow silk – will all bring good results. Gold figures are considered forms of Lakshmi. And so seeing gold, the first thing in the morning, is considered very auspicious. Seeing scriptures, signifies receiving knowledge from Goddess Saraswati. Milk, cow, children, are all propitious signs. Opening your eyes to your palms (in the morning) is also auspicious.
“Karagra vasathe lakshmi
Prabhathe kara darshanam”
(Mahalakshmi resides at the tip of your fingers, Saraswati in the middle of your palm and Mahavishnu at the bottom of your palm).
Chant this manthra while looking at your palm.
To see a sex-worker in the morning is also believed to bring good luck. Anything that happens on the first day of a month, are believed to be for your good. Meeting some people on the first is considered good, while meeting others, is not. When people with star-signs that are twice, four times, six times or eight times removed from that of the householder visit the house on the first, it is considered lucky. But people born to the ashtamirashi of their janmarashi visiting the house bodes ill. Kani kanal (‘first sight’ during vishu)is nothing but an age-old ritual.
Vishu kani is Malayalis most important kanikanal. Malayalis believe that Vishu kani will bring year round prosperity and happiness.
