Both a single story house and double story house can have stairways. In the single story house the staircases will act an external access to the terrace, while in double story houses, the stairways are both an internal link to upper levels and an external link to the terrace. The staircases should be placed in such a way that the stairs receive ample light. The width of the stairs should not fall below 80 cm. The height of each step should not exceed 12-20 cm. Any value beyond this is not advisable. Every step should be of the same dimension. A handrail around the stairs is not just an aesthetic element. It is a safety measure to avoid any injury due to falling. Wood, aluminium or iron can be used for the handrails. Internal stairways can be build straight or twisted depending upon the layout of the room.
